Alma Latina- South American music for cello and piano

Domenico Ermirio, cello
Luís Rabello, piano

Italian cellist Domenico Ermirio and Brazilian pianist Luís Rabello present their first concert together as a duo with a program dedicated to Brazilian and Argentinian music of 20th century music. It is classical music, sure, but always swinging between the genres and taking its roots from the folklore music tradition.
From the evocation of pampas landscape of Ginastera to the quite known Le Grand Tango by Astor Piazzolla, the program will make you discover the huge Sonata by Heitor Villa-Lobos ( father of modern Brazilian music) and the unedited Sonata by Radames Gnattali.

Programme:

Alberto Ginastera (1916-1983) Pampeana no. 2
Heitor Villa-Lobos (1887-1959) Sonata no 2 op. 66
Allegro moderato, Andante cantabile,
Allegro scherzando, Allegro vivace sostenuto
* * * *
Radames Gnattali (1906-1988) Sonata no. 1
Movido, Lentamente, Alegremente

Astor Piazzolla (1921-1992) Le grand tango

In this concert, actually our debut as duo, we want to celebrate the rich repertoire from South America of 20th century, focusing on Brazil and Argentina. The interesting aspects of this music is the capacity to combine different genres and traditions, with usually a taste of folk that could be found in rhythms such as in the use of harmony or in the development of thematic ideas. Though less known in Europe, Radames Gnattali is a very important figure in Brazilian music history, because he managed to be at the same time a composer of both classical and a popular music and to gain success in both fields. Starting from the will of playing his first Sonata we draw this program, where it can find its place among more renowned composers of South America.

Domenico Ermirio, born 1990 in Genova, has been playing cello since he was eight. He took the first degree ‘with honors’ in 2008 at Genova's Conservatorio “N. Paganini” in the class of Nevio Zanardi. Then he studied with Dario Destefano in Turin and in Summer 2016 he successfully obtained his Master with Johannes Goritzki in Conservatorio della Svizzera Italiana, Lugano (Switzerland). A large part of his music activity has been in chamber music groups with different performances in Italy, France, Finland, Germany, Switzerland and Belgium.
He played in string ensembles (from duo to quintet) with winds (duo and trio with flutes) with piano (trio and quartet) such as in mixed groups, ensembles dedicated to contemporary music and cello orchestras too. Since
2005 he has been working together with many Italian orchestras, during the years 2018 and 2019 he has been co-principal cellist in the Mitteldeutsche Kammerphilharmonie in Germany and he has actually the same role in
the orchestra of the Opéra Royal de Wallonie in Liège.

Luís Rabello is a concert pianist with an international career both as a soloist and as a chamber music musician and he is actually piano professor at the Rotterdam Conservatory. He performed in Germany, Switzerland,
Portugal, Spain, Italy and Brazil. In the Netherlands he has played solo recitals in important venues as De Doelen, Rotterdam and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. His most recent album received 5-star reviews by iconic
music magazines such as the Gramophone (UK) and Diapason (FR). With a deep interest in the existential expression of the Romantic period, he becomes known for his unique approach to the masters of the Romantic period.
However, his passion for the newest repertoire composed for the piano led him to carry out extensive research especially in the chamber and solo piano work by Brazilian composer Radames Gnattali.
