The art of the ud: Ilias Markantonis

Greek, Turkish, Mediterranean: improvisations and compositions

Drawing inspiration from deeply personal experiences of Greek music background, and his travels across Europe and Turkey, Ilias Markantonis is introducing his first explorations in composing original music in a long artistic journey, exploring the rich and colorful palette of sounds the ud has revealed over the past half-century.

Based on different music genres, such as early Rebetiko of Cafe Aman, spiritual music of Istanbul, Tunisian Malouf and modern compositions, he is bringing to the ud a sensitive crossover from one country to another and one spicy flavor to an aromatic flower and from a river sound to the inner soul...
As a solo instrument, the ud presents a profound challenge that it has the power to express the many emotions carried within the inner soul of every individual.
Ilias Markantonis is a Greek oud player trained in Athens and at Codarts Rotterdam, winner of the Amsterdam Ud Festival Prize (2024), known for using the oud as a leading voice through refined improvisation and makam artistry.
