Brussels-based artist, Dilum Coppens (° 1993) has featured in several exhibitions at Gallery Nostrum, starting with the galleries’ inaugural group exhibition, ‘What remains’, (October 2022, Wavre, Be).

We are delighted to welcome him to Namur for his solo exhibition, patina.

Dilum Coppens primarily creates paintings, drawings, videos, and vr that often come together in installations. He draws inspiration from his fascination with history, mythology, fantasy, and ancient artifacts, blending these with contemporary elements such as memes, drag, Y2K, and hyperfashion. His works emerge from fictional and vaguely defined times and cultures in which the historical and the contemporary flow into one another.

To this end, he makes use of elements that recur throughout his work: collages of images, stains and markings, and fragments of text.

The collages come from his archive, in which he collects images that intuitively fascinate and appeal to him. He brings images together based on feeling and chance to give the work a certain direction while also leading the viewer astray. To this he adds stains and markings that sometimes appear expressive or aesthetic, but primarily mimic a patina of wear and the passage of time. And the fragments of text, which resemble notes from historians or historical graffiti by passersby, are actually intuitive streams of consciousness that refine or further expand the mystery of the work.

His works evoke a sense of wonder. The same wonder we feel when encountering a Roman dodecahedron whose purpose is unknown, when we imagine the rituals and stories hidden behind the frescoes in the Villa dei Misteri, or the world-building of The Lord of the Rings.

In an age when images vanish faster than they can build meaning, Coppens creates artifacts that compel the viewer to slow down.

Dilum Coppens (° 1993) lives and works in Brussels, Belgium. He attained ma in Fine Arts at Luca School of Arts, Brussels in 2018. He has shown work at Sint-Lukasgallerie, Brussels (2018); Werkstadt Kunst, Berlin (2019); M Museum, Leuven (2019); Museum Dr. Guislain, Gent (2021); Ithaka, Leuven (2024) and Opek, Leuven (2025).

On “patina”
In the exhibition “patina”, Dilum shows recent works from the “Veiled” series. In his practice, he often ages his work to create a patina and the illusion of historical wear. This aspect is highlighted and explored in the “Veiled” works. Varnish is darkened and layer on top of his paintings to create a dark depth and interplay between concealing and revealing, which emulates the yellowed varnish on old paintings. In other works, the same image is copied multiple times and artificially aged more and more by distressing and staining the base of the painting, creating a trompe-l'œil of neglected storage and handling.

L’artiste bruxellois Dilum Coppens (né en 1993) a participé à plusieurs expositions à la Galerie Nostrum, à commencer par l’exposition collective inaugurale de la galerie, « What remains » (octobre 2022, Wavre, Belgique).

Nous sommes ravis de l’accueillir à Namur pour son exposition personnelle, « patina ».

Dilum Coppens crée principalement des peintures, des dessins, des vidéos et des œuvres en réalité virtuelle qui s’assemblent souvent au sein d’installations. Il puise son inspiration dans sa fascination pour l’histoire, la mythologie, le fantastique et les artefacts anciens, qu’il mêle à des éléments contemporains tels que les mèmes, le drag, le Y2K et l’hyperfashion. Ses œuvres semblent émerger d’époques et de cultures fictives et vaguement définies, où l’historique et le contemporain se confondent.

À cette fin, il utilise des éléments récurrents dans son œuvre : des collages d’images, des taches et des marques, ainsi que des fragments de texte.

Les collages proviennent de ses archives, dans lesquelles il collectionne des images qui le fascinent et l’attirent intuitivement. Il assemble des images en s'appuyant sur l'intuition et le hasard pour donner une certaine orientation à son œuvre, tout en induisant le spectateur en erreur. À cela s’ajoutent des taches et des marques qui peuvent parfois paraître expressives ou esthétiques, mais qui imitent avant tout une patine due à l’usure et au passage du temps. Quant aux fragments de texte, qui ressemblent à des notes d’historiens ou à des graffitis historiques laissés par des passants, il s’agit en réalité de flux de conscience intuitifs qui affinent ou approfondissent encore le mystère de l’œuvre.
Ses œuvres suscitent un sentiment d’émerveillement. Ce même émerveillement que l’on ressent face à un dodécaèdre romain dont la fonction reste inconnue, lorsque l’on imagine les rituels et les histoires cachés derrière les fresques de la Villa dei Misteri, ou encore l’univers créé dans *Le Seigneur des Anneaux*.

À une époque où les images disparaissent plus vite qu’elles ne parviennent à construire du sens, Coppens crée des artefacts qui obligent le spectateur à ralentir.

Dilum Coppens (° 1993) vit et travaille à Bruxelles, Belgique. Il a obtenu un master en beaux-arts à Luca School of Arts, Bruxelles en 2018. Il a exposé ses œuvres à la Sint-Lukasgallerie, Bruxelles (2018); Werkstadt Kunst, Berlin (2019); M Museum, Louvain (2019); Musée Dr Guislain, Gand (2021); Ithaka, Louvain (2024) et Opek, Louvain (2025).

On “patina”
À l'occasion de l'exposition « patina », Dilum présente des œuvres récentes issues de la série « Veiled ». Dans sa pratique artistique, il vieillit ses œuvres afin de créer une patine et l’illusion d’une usure historique. Cet aspect est exploré et mis en avant dans les œuvres de la série « Veiled ». Le vernis est assombri et appliqué en couches sur ses toiles afin de créer une profondeur obscure et un jeu entre le caché et le révélé, imitant ainsi la couche de vernis jaunie que l’on retrouve sur les tableaux anciens. Dans d’autres œuvres, la même image est reproduite à plusieurs reprises, puis vieillie et tachée artificiellement de manière de plus en plus, créant ainsi un trompe-l’œil évoquant un stockage et un traitement négligés.

De in Brussel gevestigde kunstenaar Dilum Coppens (° 1993) heeft aan verschillende tentoonstellingen bij Gallery Nostrum deelgenomen, te beginnen met de eerste groepstentoonstelling van de galerie, ‘What remains’ (oktober 2022, Waver, Be).

We zijn verheugd hem in Namen te mogen verwelkomen voor zijn solotentoonstelling ‘patina’.

Dilum Coppens (°1993) maakt voornamelijk schilderijen, tekeningen, videos en vr die vaak samenkomen in installaties. Daarbij vertrekt hij uit zijn fascinatie met geschiedenis, mythologie, fantasy en oude artefacten en mengt deze met hedendaagse elementen zoals memes, drag, Y2K en hyperfashion. Zijn werken lijken voort te komen uit fictieve en vaag-gedefinieerde tijden en culturen waarbij het historische en hedendaagse door elkaar vloeien.

Hierbij maakt hij gebruik van elementen die steeds terugkeren in zijn werk: collages van beelden, vlekken en markering, en flarden tekst.

De collages komen uit zijn archief, waarin hij beelden verzameld die hem intuïtief fascineren en aanspreken. Hij brengt enkele beelden samen gebaseerd op gevoel en willekeur om zo een bepaalde richting aan te geven in het werk en terwijl de toeschouwer ook op het foute pad te zetten. Daar voegt hij vlekken en markeringen aan toe die soms expressief of esthetisch lijken, maar vooral een patina van gebruikssporen en tijdsverloop nabootsen. En de flarden tekst, die lijken op nota’s van historici of historische graffiti van voorbijgangers, zijn eigenlijk intuïtieve gedachtestromen die het mysterie van het werk bijstuurt of nog verder verbreden.

Met zijn werken wekt hij verwondering op. Dezelfde verwondering als bij een Romeinse dodecaëder waarvan niemand het gebruik kent, wanneer we ons inbeelden welke rituelen en verhalen er achter de fresco’s in de Villa dei Misteri zitten, of de world building van Lord of The Rings.

In een tijd waarin beelden sneller verdwijnen dan ze betekenis kunnen opbouwen, maakt Coppens artefacten die de kijker dwingen te vertragen.

Dilum Coppens (° 1993) woont en werkt in Brussel, België. Hij behaalde zijn master Vrije Kunsten aan Luca School of Arts, Brussel in 2018. Hij heeft werk getoond in Sint-Lukasgallerie, Brussel (2018); Werkstadt Kunst, Berlijn (2019); M Museum, Leuven (2019); Museum Dr. Guislain, Gent (2021); Ithaka, Leuven (2024) and Opek, Leuven (2025).

On “patina”
Voor de tentoonstelling “patina” toont Dilum recente werken uit de serie “Veiled”. In zijn praktijk verouderd hij zijn werk om een patina en de illusie van historische slijtage te creëren. Dit aspect wordt onderzocht en benadrukt in de “Veiled” werken. Vernis wordt donkerder gemaakt en in lagen aangebracht op zijn schilderijen om een donkere diepte en een wisselwerking tussen verbergen en onthullen te creëren, wat de vergeelde vernislaag op oude schilderijen nabootst. In andere werken wordt hetzelfde beeld meerdere keren gekopieerd en steeds verder kunstmatig verouderd en bevlekt, waardoor een trompe-l'œil ontstaat van verwaarloosde opslag en behandeling.
