Bate Fado

Is it a choreography or a concert? A bit of both... and so much more than that. In this hybrid show, choreographers and performers Jonas & Lander celebrate the fado batido, the physical incarnation of fado, the melancholic music born in the popular neighborhoods of Lisbon. Forgotten, this piece of Portuguese heritage, full of percussion and tap dancing, energy and sensuality, was banned at the dawn of the 20th century by the Catholic Church and then by the Estado Novo dictatorship. Here it is reactivated in a danced concert where the "guitarras" respond to hand claps, heel clicks, and Jonas' powerful voice. A vibrant ode to letting go and the rebellion of bodies.
