The med Orchestra is een uniek Brussels gezelschap bestaande uit een klassiek westers kamerorkest en versterkt met een authentiek ensemble, samengesteld uit traditionele oosterse en Arabische muzikanten en instrumentarium. Dankzij zijn unieke structuur slaagt dit orkest er in om een brede waaier van genres te spelen, gaande van traditionele Marokkaanse, Algerijnse en Egyptische muziek tot Flamenco, Latino en Franse muziek. Kortom, zowat alle muziekgenres die afkomstig zijn uit de regio van de Middellandse Zee komen aan bod. De naam van het ensemble spreekt voor zich – lees med; denk, voel en hoor mediterranean. The med Orchestra werd opgericht door Tom Cohen. Deze arige muzikant-componist-arrangeur-bandleider combineert zijn westers-klassieke academische achtergrond met een speciale benadering (sommigen spreken van een gave) waarmee hij de authenticiteit van muziek uit het Midden-Oosten en Noord-Afrika kan overdragen naar klassiek opgeleide muzikanten. Tom Cohen wordt tevens beschouwd als één van de meest fascinerende Mandolineartiesten ter wereld. Hij bespeelt een instrument dat speciaal voor hem ontworpen is. Door middel van een unieke methode en een systeem dat geïnspireerd is op de klassieke mandoline, de flamencogitaar, de Griekse bouzouki en de Arabische eud; verruimt en overstijgt hij de grenzen van het gewone Mandolinespel.
Voor deze eerste passage van The med Orchestra in De Centrale staan 3 gast-artiesten centraal. Ravid Kahalani is een briljante zanger met Joods-Yemenitische roots. Met zijn stem evokeert hij op magistrale wijze het muzikale universum van zijn voorouders. Vanuit het meest zuidelijke punt van het Arabisch schiereiland neemt hij ons mee voor een tocht door de woestijn om uiteindelijk halt te houden in West-Afrika, bij de wieg van de blues. Verder maken we kennis met meester-percussionist Rony Iwryn (° Uruguay) en de getalenteerde Brits-Italiaanse singer-songwriter David Caggiari (Apartment/Age of Giants).

The med Orchestra is a unique group consisting of a classical western ensemble, fortified with an authentic ensemble and composed of musicians from different backgrounds and nationalities.
Thanks to its unique structure The med Orchestra is able to play a wide range of genres, from traditional Moroccan, Algerian and Egyptian music to flamenco, Latin and French music. In short, all genres of music originating from the Mediterranean region. The name of the ensemble speaks for itself, med; read, think, feel and hear Mediterranean.
The Med Orchestra was co-founded by Tom Cohen, a ear-old musician, composer, arranger and conductor who combines Western classical academic background with a special approach, (some speak of a gift) that he can transfer the authenticity of the Middle Eastern and North African music to classically trained musicians. Tom Cohen is also considered one of the most fascinating artists in the world of mandolin. He plays an instrument specially designed for him. Through a unique method and a system inspired by the classic mandolin, flamenco guitar, Greek bouzouki and the Arab oud, his music extends beyond the boundaries of the ordinary Mandolin Game.

For this first passage of The med at deCENTRALE, The med Orchestra hosts three guest artists; Ravid Kahalani, a brilliant singer of Yemenite Jewish roots. With his voice he masterfully evokes the musical universe of his ancestors. From the southernmost tip of the Arabian peninsula, he takes us on a journey through the desert and finally stopps in West Africa, the cradle of the blues. Furthermore, we get the chance to meet with master percussionist Rony Iwryn (Uruguay) and the talented British-Italian singer-songwriter David Caggiari (Apartment / Age of Giants).
